EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS OF LIBRARIANS IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN WEST AFRICA

Abstract
The study examines the impact of emerging technologies on the operational effectiveness of
librarians in West African academic libraries. It was guided by three research objectives and
questions, using a descriptive research design. The target population included 11 librarians from
the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) Library in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A selfdeveloped
4-point rating scale questionnaire, titled "Emerging Technologies and their Impact on
the Operational Effectiveness of Librarians in Academic Libraries in West Africa
(ETIOELALWA)," was administered. Respondents were asked to rate their agreement on a scale
from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 4 (Strongly Agree). The study used total enumeration, and data
was analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation to assess central
tendencies and variability. Out of 11 distributed questionnaires, 10 were retrieved, resulting in a
high retrieval rate of 90.91%. Nine responses were usable for analysis, leading to a utilization
rate of 81.82%. The findings revealed that technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI),
Internet of Things (IoT), and Virtual Reality (VR) significantly improved operational
effectiveness, resource management, and user engagement while lowering operational costs. The
study recommends collaboration among governments, educational institutions, academic
libraries, technology providers, and developers to integrate AI, IoT, and VR technologies into
academic libraries, enhancing operational effectiveness and fostering service delivery innovation.
