Abstract
This paper adopt descriptive survey design. The population of the study consisted of 437
professionals and para-professionals in the university libraries in North West Nigeria. The
sample size for the study is two hundred and five (205) professional and para-professional
librarians drawn using multi stage sampling technique. Records management practices by
librarians for improved library administration questionnaire (RMPLILAQ) and observation
checklists were used for data collection. Out of 205 copies of questionnaire distributed, 200
copies were correctly filled, returned and used for data analysis. The data collected were
analyzed using frequencies and percentages also mean and standard deviation were used for
answering research questions. The results reveled that professional and paraprofessional
librarians did not differ in their opinion on the planning processes employed for records creation,
organization and preservation practices employed by librarians for organizing and preserving
records for improved library administration in university libraries in North West Nigeria. The
study recommended preservation methods such as microfilms, fumigants, digitization, should be
used for effective and efficient preservation, to enhance records management practices,
competent and trained personnel should be recruited for effective organization and preservation
of records in the library.
