Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of collection management strategies in enhancing the
research productivity of Library and Information Science (LIS) postgraduate students at Benue
State University, Makurdi. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 82
postgraduate students through a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistical tools, including
mean and standard deviation, were used for analysis. Findings reveal that ICT integration, online
database subscriptions, and research support services are effective collection management
strategies, while user-centered collection development and interlibrary loan remain less effective.
Library resources such as journals and databases moderately meet postgraduate research needs,
whereas e-books and reference materials are underutilized. The study identifies key challenges,
including inadequate funding, outdated materials, and a lack of skilled personnel, which hinder
effective collection management. To address these issues and improve research productivity,
strategies such as increased funding allocation, expanded access to electronic resources, and
improved cataloging systems are recommended. The study underscores the need for proactive
collection development and enhanced digital resource access to support postgraduate research
effectively.
