UTILIZATION OF ROBOTICS IN ENHANCING SERVICE DELIVERY TO USERS IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA

Abstract
This study investigated the utilization of robotics in enhancing service delivery to users in
academic libraries in Nigeria. Employing a survey research design, the study aimed to (1)
assess the robotic technologies available for service delivery; (2) identify potential areas for
effective utilization; (3) evaluate the perceived impact on user satisfaction; and (4) examine
challenges in their utilization. The sample comprised 50 librarians purposively selected from
two universities and two polytechnics across Rivers and Anambra States. Data were collected
using an observation checklist and a questionnaire, validated by three experts, and yielding a
Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.79. Descriptive statistics, including mean scores
and standard deviation, were used for data analysis. The findings revealed a complete
absence of robotic technologies in the surveyed libraries, indicating a significant lag in
automation. However, librarians expressed strong consensus on the potential of robotics to
enhance operational efficiency, including increased convenience, personalized assistance, and
a modern library image. Despite this optimism, librarians strongly perceived several
challenges, notably high initial costs, lack of technical expertise, potential user resistance,
technical malfunctions, data privacy concerns, and customization difficulties. The study
concludes that while the potential of robotics is recognized, significant infrastructural and
capacity gaps hinder its adoption. It recommends the initiation of pilot programs with low-
cost technologies, fostering partnerships with technology institutions, developing best
practice guidelines, providing targeted staff training, and establishing robust data privacy
protocols to facilitate the integration of robotics in Nigerian academic libraries.
