Abstract
This study was designed to explore the perspectives of University of Jos library
professionals about the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the library's
operations. Six research questions guided the study. Mixed methods design was adopted as
the research design. Questionnaire and interview were used to obtain the required data.
The following are the major findings obtained from the analyses of the questionnaire:
majority of the participants 15 (88.2%) are aware of the concept of AI; majority 15 (88.2%)
are aware of Chat GPT and Google Gemini as AI tools; about three quarter of them
13(76.4%) use Chat GPT personally for educational purposes; and all the participants 17
(100%) have the perspective that AI will revolutionize the library's operations. Findings
obtained from the interview revealed that Chat GPT is currently being used to index
newspaper articles in the library's serials section. The findings further revealed that the
library plans to integrate AI tools into more of its operations gradually. Based on the
findings, it was inferred amongst others that mainstream professionals have positive
perspective on the integration of AI into the library's operations. Also, based on the
findings, it was recommended that the library management should organize in-house
seminars to further enlighten the professionals about AI. Also, it was recommended that the
professionals should attend numerous AI conferences. Finally, it was recommended that the
management should partner and learn from other academic libraries that are ahead of
them in terms of the integration AI into their operations.
