Abstract
As artificial intelligence (AI) adoption increases in university libraries, ethical concerns such as data privacy, academic integrity, and equity are becoming more significant. This study examines the ethical implications of AI in librarianship, focusing on the responsibilities and challenges faced by library personnel Nigeria. It highlights the need for a comprehensive ethical framework to guide AI integration in library services, ensuring that they are equitable and inclusive. The study surveyed 106 library personnel from six public university libraries using a purposive sampling technique and a quantitative research method in the form of questionnaires. The survey covers AI applications, perceptions of library staff regarding AI ethics, and the responsibilities and challenges faced. 97 copies of questionnaire administered were found statistically usable and descriptive statistics was adopted for data analysis. The findings revealed that while AI adoption is growing, many library personnel faces challenges due to limited training, resources, and knowledge of AI technologies. The study identifies the need for stronger AI ethics governance and policy frameworks. The research also underscores the critical role of librarians in promoting responsible AI use to enhance access to information while maintaining ethical standards.
