Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) in library settings involves the use of advanced technologies to
enhance library services, increase operational efficiency, and improve the overall user
experience. As libraries evolve into dynamic hubs of information and technology, AI
technologies are being integrated into various facets of library operations. The target
population for this study consisted of 1,500 students registered with the university library.
A sample of 200 students was selected for analysis. Data collection was conducted using a
convenience sampling approach. A questionnaire, was adapted from established scales
developed by Krejcie and Morgan (1970), with minor modifications made to align with the
specific context of this research. This paper explores the implications of AI on the future of
libraries. Assessing current trends and envisioning future developments, this research aims
to provide a comprehensive understanding of how AI can reshape library services,
ensuring they remain relevant and effective in an increasingly digital environment. The
future of library services will rely on AI technologies to enhance accessibility and
inclusivity. The findings indicate a positive correlation between artificial intelligence and
the future of library and information service delivery, as evidenced by a correlation
coefficient of 0.535, which is statistically significant at the 0.05 level. In conclusion, AI
presents transformative opportunities for libraries, careful consideration of its
implementation will be important in navigating ethical challenges and maximizing its
potential benefits for both library operations and user experiences. This study advocates
for the administration of Lagos State University to provide complimentary access to
artificial intelligence tools and free internet services within the university library.
