Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of socio-economic determinants
on research productivity of academic staff of Nigerian Polytechnics. Specifically, the
study examined the relationship between socio-economic of the academic staff and their
research productivity and further predicted which socio-economic factors are actually
promoting or limiting the pace of research productivity of Polytechnic staff in Nigeria. A
cross-sectional data of 565 staff was collected through a multistage sampling technique
from the study area., using structured questionnaire. Data were analysed by both
descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that about 60% of the respondents
were less than 50 years. The multiple regression results showed that research
productivity is positively and significantly impacted by educational level (5.995), an
academic status (1.969), monthly income (2.924), and work experience (3.13). The
study concludes that socio-economic factors of individual lecturers, particularly their
educational level, work experience and income are key determinants of research
productivity. The study therefore, suggested that all theses factors should be taken into
consideration by policy makers in the process of designing appropriate interventions
that will ultimately enhance productivity of academic staff of tertiary institutions.
