IMPACT OF GREEN LIBRARY INITIATIVES FOR SUSTAINABILITY OF ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH LIBRARIES IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

Abstract
The Green Library Initiatives championed by the American Library Association (ALA) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), is a global collaborative effort aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship within library spaces. These organisations emphasise the importance of libraries in leading the way for environmental sustainability, not only through their infrastructure but also by promoting sustainable practices within their communities. This paper reviewed the concepts of Contemporary Society; Academic Libraries; Research Libraries; and Green Library Initiatives. It also highlights the Impact of Green Library Initiatives in Academic and Research Libraries, Challenges Hindering the Adoption of Green Library Initiatives for Sustainability of Academic and Research Libraries in Contemporary Society and Concludes that these challenges require concerned concerted efforts from Academic and Research Library leadership, policy makers and other stakeholders, with emphasis on education, resources allocation and collaborative networks for the sustainability of these libraries in contemporary time. The article offered some recommendations including stronger institutional management support, increased budgetary provisions, and enhanced awareness programs, among others.
