ASSESSMENT OF MANAGEMENT AND USE OF LEGAL DEPOSIT
MATERIALS BY LIBRARIANS FOR EFFECTIVE USER SUPPORT
IN THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF NIGERIA, LOKOJA
Abstract
The paper examined the assessment of management and use of legal deposit materials by
librarians for effective user support in the National Library, Lokoja. Four (4) research questions
were formulated based on the purpose of the study to guide the work. Questionnaires were
used to elicit information from the respondents that consisted of librarians and library users
who formed the total population of respondents. Major findings of the study showed that legal
deposit practice is available in the National Library, Lokoja. It was also revealed that legal
deposit helps the library to fulfil international goals of universal bibliographic control, through
the local bibliographic control, helps the users in their various disciplines, allows the library
users to gain access to the information resources and services, current information resources
can be accessed easily. Problems identified include the inability of the National Library to
enforce the legal deposit laws, poor attitude and lack of stringent enforcement of penalties,
low patronage by users. The study concluded by recommending timeliness of legal deposit
laws and the introduction of annual award to the best publisher of the year.

TOWN-GOWN RELATIONSHIP: THE ACADEMIC LIBRARY ENGAGEMENT IN
PRESERVING INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE
Abstract
This paper focuses on the relationship between town-gown by exploring the academic
engagement in preserving indigenous knowledge. It identifies key strategies for academic
libraries to support indigenous knowledge preservation, including community-led, inclusive
collections, and culturally responsive programming. The paper adopted the thematic approach
that identifies and analyzes themes and patterns in a study. The privatization of the academic
libraries for the interest of their staff and students but excluding their neighbours who live on the
other side of the academic institutions‟ boundaries calls to question the interaction and
harmonious co-existence of the Town and the Gown. The implications of this nexus between the
town and the gown were discussed. The findings of the study amongst others are that strong
town-gown relationship preservation is crucial for successful preservation of indigenous
knowledge; academic libraries‟ engagement in preserving indigenous knowledge enhances their
relevance and value to both the town and the gown, and continuous preservation and
improvement of town-gown relationship and preservation of indigenous knowledge are
necessary for long-term collaborative success. The challenges faced by these libraries in their
preservation of indigenous knowledge and supporting town-gown relationship include limited
understanding of indigenous knowledge systems, mistrust and hindered access to indigenous
knowledge by local communities, intellectual property rights and access. Based on the findings
and challenges, recommendations were made.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT READINESS IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: AN
INSIGHT INTO ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN SOKOTO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
The study investigated disaster management readiness in Nigerian Universities: an insight
into academic libraries in Sokoto State. The objectives were to; find out awareness of disaster
management policy; find out the disaster mitigation measures; examine level of knowledge of
emergency preparedness among staff of risk management units and find out disaster policy
implementation challenges in the selected universities in Sokoto State. The population for the
study was all the 60 librarians in the three selected universities in Sokoto State. The study
adopted a descriptive research design and questionnaire was used as method of data
collection. Results showed that most of the respondents were aware of the formulated policy
on all activities relating to disaster management in their university library. The study found
that larger percentage of the respondents has strong knowledge of disaster mitigation
measures to eliminate and reduce the impacts on disaster on risks of hazards in their
university library. The study found that more respondents have a very strong knowledge of
emergency preparedness among staff of risk management units of the selected universities.
The study discovered that there are various challenges affecting disaster policy
implementation in selected universities in Sokoto State which include inadequate funding of
disaster management training, which is a critical factor to disaster policy implementation.
Based on the findings, the study recommended that University authority should ensure that
university formulated policy on all activities relating to disaster management in the university
library among others.

PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION OF MATERIALS IN MEDICAL LIBRARY, COLLEGE OF
HEALTH SCIENCES. BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY, MAKURDI, BENUE STATE, NIGERIA.
ABSTRACT
The study investigated preservation and conservation of materials in the Medical Library of the College of Health
Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey as its
design. The population of the study consists of all the 200 level medical students for the 2022/2023 academic
session. The sample for the study consists of 500 students (350 MBBS and 150 Anatomy Students). A structured
questionnaire was administered to the sampled respondents. Document Analysis Guide (DAG) was also used to
collect results of 200 level students of MBBS and Anatomy. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting
the medical students that participated in the study. The statistical tool used for answering research questions was
simple percentage. While chi-square (x2 ) was used for testing the hypotheses. Findings revealed that security of
library materials, disaster recovery procedure, environmental control, proper handling of library materials, training
of staff on preservation of materials were used as preservation and conservation practices in the Medical Library of
the College of Health Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi. Recommendations such as preservation and
conservation of compendium of information, rare materials manuscripts, hand copies of the old as well as new
materials which are prone to decay and digitalization of library materials should be preserved at the Medical
Library of the College of Health Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi were made.

AVAILABILITY AND USE OF LIBRARY RESOURCES BY THE PHYSICALLY
CHALLENGED STUDENTS FOR IMPROVED ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED
SPECIAL SCHOOLS IN ABUJA
Abstract
This study investigated the availability and use of library resources by the physically challenged students
for improved academic performance in selected special schools in Abuja. The study answered four
research questions. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the research. The populations of the study
were all the identified students with mobility, hearing and visual impairments. The total number of
physically challenged students was 120 from where a sample of 80 was taken. Questionnaire was used to
collect data for the study. The collected data was analyzed using simple percentages. Findings revealed
that information resources in the library under study are grossly inadequate. It is also revealed that the
available information resources in the library understudy were not accessible. Based on the findings, it
was recommended among others that money should be made available for the procurement of library
materials, provision of computers and internet facilities in the library, while proper awareness should be
created by the library on the information resources they have. There shouldbe employment of more
qualified library staff; while information retrieval tools such as catalogue, abstracts, etc. should be
prepared to ease accessibility and organization of intensive user education programme to teach students
how to use library materials. The study concluded that information resources should be made available
and access should be created to enable students utilize the resources effectively.

EVALUATION OF OCCUPATIONAL STRESS ON JOB PERFORMANCE
AMONG LIBRARY PERSONNEL IN PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTH-WEST, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of occupational stress on job performance among library
personnel in private university libraries in South-West Nigeria. Adopting a descriptive survey
method, 159 participants were surveyed across various job units. The findings revealed a
pervasive high level of occupational stress, with a mean score of 42.01. Five major stress-
generating factors were identified: responsibility pressure, role conflict, job vs. non-job conflict,
workload, and quality concerns. Notably, responsibility pressure was most prominent in the
reference section, while role conflict was highest in the circulation section, and quality concerns
were most pronounced in the cataloguing section. The study also confirmed a significant
negative relationship (r = -0.311; p<0.05) between occupational stress and job performance,
emphasising the need for targeted interventions. Recommendations were made on the need to
implement targeted stress management programmes, unit-specific interventions, enhance
workload distribution, and incorporate performance improvement initiatives. By addressing these
recommendations, private university libraries can create a more supportive work environment,
enhancing the well-being and performance of their personnel.

MANAGEMENT OF INTERNALLY GENERATED REVENUE FUND IN SELECTED
UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the origins and administration of internally generated funds in university
libraries, focusing on si' university libraries in Delta State, Nigeria. The study employed a survey
research design. The study population consisted of 102 active librarians from the si' university
libraries under investigation. The study utilized the total enumeration sample technique. Data for
the study was collected through the use of questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. The findings
indicate that librarians engage in various activities, such as project typesetting and binding, printing
and scanning services, and operating bookshops, to generate revenue for their libraries. Internally
generated funds in university libraries are used to supplement the funding received from their parent
institutions. These funds are used to acquire information resources, renew internet subscriptions,
and support library staff. Implementing an internally generated revenue (IGR) policy, establishing a
dedicated account for library revenue, and utilizing technology for payment are effective strategies
for managing IGR in university libraries. However, barriers to IGR generation in university
libraries include librarians negative attitudes, lack of patronage, inadequate facilities, lack of
continuity, and absence of a guiding policy. It is consequently suggested that university libraries
should engage in further initiatives, be intentional, open, and establish trust, assure effective
administration of income-generating resources in libraries, and strive to remove all barriers.

Abstract
This paper was intended to equip Library and Information Science students, collection development staff and
other professional with the knowledge and skills for collection building management. It gave insights into the
types of information materials acquired into the library initially and currently. It also e'amines methods
involved in collection development procedures, miscellaneous activities of collection development and
concludes with the challenges of collection development and pointed out ways to overcome them. Libraries are
e'pected to develop and manage their information resources effectively. This paper highlights the types of

Abstract
This study e'amined the application of information and communication technology for effective
library services delivery among Professional librarians in Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University
Makurdi, Benue State. The study adopted survey research design; questionnaire was used as the
primary instrument for data collection on the application of information and communication
technology for effective library services delivery among librarians in Joseph Sarwuan Tarka
University Makurdi Benue State. The population for the study comprises of 46 professional
librarians. Census sampling method was used to sample all the professional librarian. The data
collected were analyzed using means, tables and standard deviations. Findings of the study
revealed that that access to information and communication technology resources in Joseph
Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi is to a Low e'tent, librarians utilize information and
communication technology resources in Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi to a high
e'tent and effective application of information and communication technology resources
influences library service delivery among professional librarians in Federal University of
Agriculture Makurdi. The study however recommended that: the management of Joseph
Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi should subscribe to online databases to enable staff of the
library, have access to more current information that will improve on their services delivery to its
users.

APPLICATION AND UTILIZATION OF MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
EDUCATION OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS IN
THE CONTEMPORARY ERA
Abstract
This work e'amined the application and utilization of multimedia technology in the education of
library and information science professionals in the contemporary era. It tried to e'plore library
and information science education as a basis for the study and also it provided a succinct
overview of the concept of multimedia technology. This study however, justified the need for
adoption of multimedia technology as global best practice in library and information science
education in contemporary era. It further looked at the challenges associated with the adoption of
multimedia technology for effective instructional delivery.The paper identified some factors
militating against application and utilization of media technologies such aslack of competence in
the use of multimedia technology, inadequate power supply, poor funding of library schools,high
cost of multimedia facilities. Based on the above challenges some recommendations were made
that, Federal Ministry of Education and relevant government agencies should adequately fund
library and information science education programme in universities in Nigerian and equip their
computer laboratories with up-to-date multimedia technologies that will meet the needs of the
contemporary global society, as it is very essential that steady power supply is provided in school
for powering multimedia systemand conclusions were made.

APPLICATION OF CONVENTIONAL AND ONLINE CATALOGUING PRACTICES BY
LIBRARIANS IN TWO FEDERAL UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN SOUTH EAST NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examined conventional and online cataloguing practices by librarians in two Federal
Universities viz: University of Nigeria, Nsukka; and Federal University of Technology, Owerri. Five (5)
research questions were formulated based on the purpose of the study to guide the work. Questionnaire
and oral interview were used to elicit information from the respondents that consisted of ninety three
(93) university librarians who formed the total population of respondents. Major findings show mat
online cataloguing is a recent development and that, conventional cataloguing is practiced more than
online cataloguing in university libraries, The study shows that librarians are highly skilled in
conventional cataloguing. Problems identified include poor network connectivity, Jack of incentive^
lack of skills in using tools, and inadequate power supply. The study concluded by recommending
improved network connectivity, provision of relevant tools, positive management approach, need for
competent chief cataloguers, improved work environment, provision of funds for cataloguing and
provision of necessary incentives/motivation of staff by relevant agencies as ways of enhancing
conventional and online cataloguing practices by librarians in the university libraries.

EVOLVING WORLD
Abstract
The research e'plored marketing library and information resources and services in an evolving
world. This paper used literature review as a methodology for conducting research. The literature
reviewed e'posed the decline to users‟ patronage of library service and resources. It also
revealed the various strategies for marketing library services which include: adoption of social
media, display and e'hibition of resources, organizing library events, user orientation,use of
website, newsletters and the engagement of press. Marketable library services discussed include
academic databases, referral services/interlibrary loan, internet access service, literature search
service, SDI, photocopying and binding service. The benefits of marketing library services was
also discussed. The paper recommended that libraries should fully adopt various marketing
strategies in order to remain relevant in the constantly changing world. Marketing and advocacy
of library services should be incorporated into LIS curriculum so as to train future librarians on
how to market library services and resources in an evolving world.

Abstract
The study investigated strategic planning in job performance of selected university librarian in university
libraries in South-East, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design using
questionnaire as instrument for data collection. The population of the study consists of 6 university
librarians from university libraries in South-East, Nigeria. A total of 6 questionnaires were distributed, all
were retrieved. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics mean and percentage mean score
of 2.5 and above and percentage score of 50% were considered. The study revealed that strategic planning
is for decision making, provides organizational long-term direction. analyzing the situation of an
organization, it reveals and clarifies future opportunities and threats and strategic planning looks ahead
towards desired goals. The study also affirmed the challenges affecting the implementation of strategic
planning and among university librarians in selected university libraries in South-East, Nigeria as poor
alignment, resistance to change, inadequate communication, lack of accountability, and slow adoption.
The study recommends that university librarians should ensure that they adopt some good strategic plans
in order to enhance their job performance and also, the challenges affecting strategic planning should be
avoided by all cost.
